IMITATION

“Hi, madam, how are you?” Shakun greeted me. “I am fine, Shakun. How about you?” I replied. Shakun responded by nodding his head. He was fair, lean, and tall, about fifteen years old. He wore wine-colored spectacles. His shoulders drooped, and he walked with hands clasped. His body language indicated that he had been pushed for this meeting with me. I smiled and signaled him to sit across me. He sat there with his head down, not interested in looking at me.

Weather is a good subject to start any conversation. “Was it raining when you started?” I asked. He said, “Yes, madam!” “So how did you come?” I asked. “The driver drove me down.” “Ok. I thought you would take the metro. I am sure the traffic would have been quite heavy.” And my conversation continued over different subjects, from traffic to climate to potholes to July 26, and so on.

Shakun was referred to me by his mother, who also happens to be my coachee. According to her, he does not open up and has great difficulty making friends. He is a loner, and she is worried as to what is going on in his head, and wants me to connect with him to understand him better. I understood that Shakun came to meet me only due to his mother’s nagging and wanted to stage the meeting for failure. Coaching happens only when the coachee is ready; he cannot be pushed. So I decided to make the conversation more friendly.

After, say, ten minutes, I saw Shakun open his crossed arms across his chest. I asked him, “Would you like to have a cup of coffee with me? Then you can proceed back home.” Shakun’s face lit up with surprise, and he relaxed. The conversation during the coffee was much easier. He spoke about his favorite actors, movies, books, and so forth. While I was paying the bill, Shakun asked me, “Madam, Mummy said you will be my coach.” I replied, “Yes, we can do coaching some other day. Thank you for the time you invested,” and we parted ways. Shakun’s parents are a handsome couple and very health conscious and very social in nature. Shakun was the only child of his parents and the only grandchild of his grandparents. That meant a lot of pressure on the child.

Within three hours, Shakun’s mother called me, “Veena, are you free tomorrow? Can I book a slot for Shakun? He would like to meet you.” I said, “Yes, I can meet him, but let me speak to him first.” She gave the phone to him. “Shakun, tell me what can I do for you?” I asked. He said, “Madam, I would like to talk to you; can you give me time for tomorrow?” “Ok, we will meet in the same place, same time. But you will have to buy me coffee.” He giggled and put down the phone.

Shakun looked more relaxed the next day. He ordered coffee for both of us, sat back, then leaned forward, and said, “Madam, I want to talk to you.
